This position supports the deployment and modernization of wide area network systems at remote sites across CONUS and OCONUS locations. The engineer will lead the physical installation and configuration of network infrastructure, including routers, switches, encryptors, and patch panels, ensuring secure and efficient connectivity.
Key Responsibilities
- Upgrade and maintain WAN equipment and fiber optic systems at distributed sites
- Design and install copper and fiber cabling for data centers and outdoor plant environments
- Perform fusion splicing on various fiber types and configure splice trays
- Install and rack network hardware, including transceivers and pre-terminated fiber assemblies
- Collaborate with site coordinators and remote contacts to schedule and execute deployments
- Coordinate with COMSEC custodians to manage cryptographic keying material ahead of installations
- Generate and update cable diagrams before and after project completion
- Verify Layer 1 connectivity in coordination with network engineering teams
Required Qualifications
- Familiarity with copper cabling standards including CAT5E, CAT6, and CAT6A
- Experience working with single-mode and multimode fiber types (OS2, OM1–OM4)
- Proficiency in fusion splicing techniques and use of splice trays and connectors
- Knowledge of pre-terminated fiber systems such as MTP-MTP, MPO-MPO, and LC-LC
- Understanding of optical transceivers including SFP and QSFP modules
- Ability to operate hand tools and common field testing equipment
- Working knowledge of Windows OS, Microsoft Office, and basic scripting
- Capable of lifting and transporting equipment up to 50 pounds
- U.S. citizenship is required
Preferred Skills
- Experience with router configuration, cryptonet setup, and circuit activation
- Background in outside plant fiber installation and safety protocols
- Knowledge of data center layouts, rack mounting, and cable management practices
- Experience troubleshooting LAN and WAN connectivity issues
- Familiarity with fiber test tools such as OTDR, power meters, VFL, and TBERD
- Understanding of DISA Telecommunication Service Orders (TSO)
- Prior government contracting or military technical experience
- Information technology or related field experience
Work Environment
This is a hybrid role with extensive travel requirements—up to 75%—including deployments lasting one to two weeks or longer. Work occurs in diverse environments, including data centers, remote facilities, and outdoor locations. The position demands adherence to safety standards and the ability to adapt to changing site conditions.
