Cephalgo is hiring a FERMILAB Mechanical Engineer (FRA10)

This role supports the Proton Improvement Plan II (PIP-II) Construction Administration at Fermilab in Batavia, IL, focusing on the development and implementation of mechanical systems for advanced scientific infrastructure. The engineer will lead design efforts for mechanical components in buildings and specialized equipment, producing detailed schematics, material specifications, and system requirements.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design mechanical systems for facilities and industrial machinery, ensuring technical accuracy and adherence to project goals
  • Create and evaluate prototypes of mechanical devices such as power systems, engines, and precision tools
  • Conduct performance testing and diagnostics to verify system safety, reliability, and operational efficiency
  • Supervise installation, commissioning, and ongoing maintenance of mechanical equipment
  • Lead and coordinate with engineering and technical staff, providing guidance and quality oversight
  • Perform technical research to integrate emerging technologies into current and future systems
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, ASME, and other applicable safety and engineering standards
  • Collaborate with electrical, software, and systems engineers, as well as project managers, to align mechanical design with broader project objectives

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in mechanical engineering or a closely related discipline
  • Strong grasp of core engineering principles including thermodynamics, mechanics, and materials science
  • Proficient in CAD software and engineering analysis tools
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical challenges under schedule and budget constraints
  • Excellent communication skills, with experience presenting technical data to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Proven teamwork and collaboration skills in multidisciplinary environments
  • High attention to detail in design documentation and system validation
  • Valid professional engineering license in the state of Illinois

Preferred Qualifications

  • Certification in CAD or digital manufacturing platforms
  • Systems Engineering Professional (SEP) credential
  • Quality Engineer certification or equivalent
  • Other relevant technical certifications
