This role is central to advancing environmental justice by conducting in-depth analysis of regulatory policies and project-level assessments that affect historically marginalized and underserved communities. The Environmental Scientist will apply interdisciplinary knowledge to evaluate the distribution of environmental burdens and benefits, ensuring compliance with federal equity mandates such as Executive Order 13985. The position plays a key advisory function in shaping equitable outcomes for energy and infrastructure projects, working closely with multidisciplinary teams to integrate environmental justice considerations into decision-making processes. Success in this role requires a strong foundation in environmental science, policy analysis, and a commitment to advancing social equity through technical rigor and community-centered approaches.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate environmental impact reports and related documentation from federal, state, and local agencies for consistency and completeness.
- Examine policy frameworks to determine geographic scope and criteria used in identifying affected communities near infrastructure projects.
- Assess potential environmental justice impacts of energy and infrastructure projects on underserved or vulnerable populations.
- Contribute to advancing equity goals by supporting implementation of FERC’s first Equity Action Plan as directed by Executive Order 13985.
Requirements
- Proven experience as an Environmental Scientist with strong analytical capabilities.
- Demonstrated knowledge of environmental justice principles and equity-focused policy analysis.
- Proficiency in reviewing and interpreting environmental assessments and regulatory policies.
