The New York Times is hiring an Engineering Manager to guide our mobile engineering teams. In this hybrid role based in New York City, you will lead efforts to build and improve our flagship apps for News, Games, Cooking, and Growth, overseeing technical strategy and fostering team development.
What You'll Do
- Guide and mentor a growing mobile engineering team to ensure consistent technical direction, best practices, high performance, and efficient delivery across multiple initiatives.
- Oversee the mobile technical operations strategy for both iOS and Android platforms.
- Collaborate with other teams to ensure alignment on department and company strategies.
- Collaborate with Engineering Managers to develop best practices and processes for a growing cohort of engineers.
- Oversee career development and performance management for a team of engineers.
- Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission.
What We're Looking For
- 1+ years of experience as an Engineering Manager leading a native mobile team.
- Experience with mobile operation tooling, including CI, build systems, and app store integrations.
- Prior software development experience with iOS or Android.
- Experience facilitating team growth through hiring, developing engineers, building trust, and refining delivery processes.
- Demonstrated understanding of the mobile domain and its unique complexities.
- Experience managing high-performing teams, including senior engineers.
- Experience explaining highly technical concepts to non-technical partners and stakeholders.
Nice to Have
- Expertise in Swift/SwiftUI and/or Kotlin/Jetpack Compose.
- Knowledge of mobile architectures (MVC/MVP/MVVM), concurrency, memory management, and multi-device/version support.

- Compensation range: $152,000-$190,000 USD.
