Shell Energy Europe & Environmental Products is looking for an Energy Analyst/Data Scientist to join its Market Analysis team. In this role, you will develop and improve forecasting models, focusing on building and productionising time series forecasting and optimisation models for the power market. You will work closely with domain experts in a high-pace environment.
What You'll Do
- Prepare, process, clean and visualize various kinds of power, gas, and weather data sets.
- Develop, analyse, and conduct different approaches to forecast variables like demand, wind, solar, and prices.
- Statistically evaluate and validate different types of forecasts.
- Build the framework to deploy models in production for daily trading decisions.
- Share development frameworks with the team to increase performance.
- Participate in the conception and development of a computational environment for scalability and high computational power.
- Develop in-house optimisation models such as stack models and dispatch models.
- Bring new model ideas to improve the desk P&L.
- Delegate and lead some models and infrastructure projects done by teams of high technical people in IT and modelling.
What We're Looking For
- A graduate qualification in an analytical or science-based discipline such as engineering, maths, or computer science.
- High knowledge for solving unstructured and non-standard mathematical problems.
- End-to-end experience with data, including querying, aggregation, analysis, and visualization.
- Strong competencies in Python for data analysis using libraries like Pandas, NumPy, SciPy, and Scikit-learn.
- Strong SQL skills for data retrieval, basic analysis, and data cleansing.
- Strong knowledge and application of object-oriented design and software best practices in Python.
- Familiarity with cloud architecture, with a focus on deploying and hosting applications in a cloud environment.
- A self-starter who is commercially aware, value focused, and able to work with minimal supervision and guidance.
- Good communication skills to present new developments and facilitate acceptance by the team and the traders.
Nice to Have
- Ideally a PhD in machine learning, optimisation or an equivalent field.
- Proficiency in algorithmic complexity theory.
- Proficiency in parallelism & concurrency.
- Experience with messaging and or data streaming technologies such as Kafka, ActiveMQ, Azure Service Bus, and Azure Event Hubs.
- Experience implementing algorithms and data-structures.
- Good knowledge of linear algebra, calculus, and discrete mathematics.
