GoodParty.org is hiring a Director of Engineering to lead our technical strategy and team. As a Public Benefit Corporation, our mission is to make people matter more than money in our democracy. You will guide a rapidly growing engineering team, shipping ambitious products and integrating AI to reinvent civic leadership.
What You'll Do
- Lead and empower a mission-critical engineering team, balancing strategic scaling with ground-up innovation.
- Recruit, lead, and develop top-tier Frontend, Backend, and QA engineers, fostering individual growth and advancing AI fluency.
- Foster a fast-paced, collaborative culture where engineers feel empowered and see the impact of their work.
- Collaborate on embedding AI deeply across our platform in an empowering and responsible way.
- Own and evolve engineering OKRs and roadmap, balancing speed and long-term scalability.
- Partner closely with Product, Design, and Data teams to ideate, prototype, and ship features quickly.
- Guide the team through ambiguity, building MVPs to test hypotheses and improving based on feedback.
- Remove blockers, resolve technical challenges quickly, and leverage cutting-edge AI tools to accelerate development.
- Champion best practices including clean architecture, code reviews, and scalable patterns.
- Balance leadership with technical contribution by dedicating up to 25% of your time to hands-on coding and architecture.
- Report directly to the CEO, serve on the leadership team, and shape engineering culture and roadmap.
What We're Looking For
- 10+ years of engineering experience.
- Experience in the last 5 years managing both frontend and backend engineers and owning product delivery.
- Experience building and scaling products in a startup or early-stage environment and working through ambiguity.
- Comfort doing 0 to 1 work, leading greenfield builds, launching MVPs, and making pragmatic decisions with limited data.
- Confidence developing across the tech stack: React, Next.js, Node.js, Python, Postgres.
- Experience with and championing AI-native workflows for coding, including Cursor, OpenAI/Anthropic, Gemini/Perplexity, and MCPs.
- Track record of creating inclusive team cultures, mentoring engineers, and building feedback loops.
- Thrive in a remote, fast-paced environment, balancing strategic thinking with a bias toward action.
- Communicate clearly, directly, respectfully, and are open to delivering and receiving candid feedback.
Nice to Have
- Experience working or volunteering in civic tech, democracy reform, campaigns, or social impact.
- Contributed to open-source projects or developer communities.

- Compensation: $200,000 to $260,000.
