Axon is hiring a Director of Artificial Intelligence

The Director of Artificial Intelligence will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of AI-driven public safety solutions. This leader will be responsible for defining the strategic vision and technical roadmap for AI and machine learning platforms, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and customer needs. The role involves leading cross-functional teams in developing cutting-edge AI systems that operate seamlessly across cloud and edge environments, with a focus on scalability, reliability, and real-time performance. The ideal candidate will combine deep technical expertise with strong leadership skills to foster innovation, mentor engineering talent, and drive the adoption of best practices in machine learning engineering and distributed systems architecture.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a strategic leader to inspire innovation, drive adoption of modern engineering practices, and advance AI technologies across the organization's value chain
  • Build and manage a top-tier team of machine learning platform engineers skilled in distributed training, edge AI, data engineering, and cloud-to-device deployment
  • Partner with science, technology, and product teams to design and implement data ingestion systems and model pipelines spanning development, deployment, monitoring, and performance optimization
  • Challenge existing technical approaches by introducing advanced distributed system designs, including high-throughput training and low-latency inference architectures
  • Foster a collaborative, inclusive culture rooted in ownership, experimentation, and innovation while aligning with product teams to deliver customer-focused solutions

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or a closely related technical field
  • Over 10 years of software engineering experience with a demonstrated ability to design and implement highly available, low-latency systems for high-traffic applications
  • Minimum of 6 years in a leadership role with a proven history of building and managing engineering teams
  • Proficient in Scala or Java, with hands-on experience in Python for machine learning workflows
  • Extensive experience designing and deploying scalable, high-throughput machine learning pipelines for both streaming and batch processing
  • Strong hands-on expertise with major cloud platforms such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud
  • Exceptional problem-solving abilities with deep engagement in system architecture, performance metrics, code quality, testing, and operational execution
  • Effective communication skills for working across disciplines with scientists, engineers, and product managers

Nice to Have

  • Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or a related technical field
  • 12 or more years of experience developing and delivering AI-powered data science products
  • Proven experience with commercial machine learning platforms from major cloud providers
  • Background in IoT and Edge AI, including optimization of ML pipelines for constrained on-device environments
  • Prior leadership of geographically dispersed engineering teams

Compensation

Base pay range: $204,000 - $326,400 USD per year. Equity: Stock awards included in total compensation. Bonus included in total compensation; total compensation include
