The Critical Care Paramedic is responsible for providing advanced medical treatment, stabilization, and safe transport of urgent and non-urgent patients via air and, in some locales, land. The role involves practicing within defined medical directives and contributing to a clean, safe, and collaborative pre-hospital and inter-facility care environment.
Responsibilities
- Initiate and provide treatment, stabilization, and safe transport of emergent, urgent, and non-urgent patients via air and, in some locales, land
- Perform general paramedic duties including assessment of injuries or medical illnesses of trauma victims, patients with respiratory and cardiovascular disease, overdose and poisoning victims, industrial accident victims, and other ill or injured individuals
- Determine emergency medical treatment based on patient assessment
- Administer pre-hospital emergency care such as oxygen therapy, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), spinal immobilization, bandaging, splinting, intravenous (IV) treatments, and adjunctive equipment for ventilation and circulation
- Provide critical care treatment and intervention in pre-hospital and inter-facility settings
- Perform advanced airway management
- Provide mechanical ventilation
- Initiate and maintain pharmaceutical infusions
- Administer blood and blood products
- Provide intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) support
- Provide care to high-risk obstetrical and neonatal patients
- Maintain emergency care equipment and supplies
- Participate in maintaining a clean and safe work environment
- Document and record the nature of injuries, illnesses, and treatment provided
- Collaborate with dispatch centres, hospital staff, and others to ensure relevant information is collected and proper treatment is administered
- Practice with medical skills and knowledge in the transport environment within scope of practice
- Adhere to all Ornge/MOH medical directives, policies, and procedures
- Support and promote the strategic vision and principles of Ornge
Requirements
- Must be able to initiate and provide treatment, stabilization, and safe transport of patients via air and land
- Must perform general paramedic duties including patient assessment and emergency treatment determination
- Must administer pre-hospital emergency care including oxygen therapy, CPR, spinal immobilization, bandaging, splinting, IV treatments, and use of adjunctive equipment
- Must provide critical care interventions such as advanced airway management, mechanical ventilation, pharmaceutical infusions, blood product administration, IABP support, and care for high-risk obstetrical and neonatal patients
- Must maintain emergency care equipment and supplies
- Must document patient conditions and treatments accurately
- Must collaborate with dispatch centres, hospital staff, and other stakeholders
- Must practice within defined scope of practice and adhere to Ornge/MOH medical directives, policies, and procedures
