City and County of San Francisco is hiring a Cook (2654) - Camp Mather Summer 2026 (outside of San Francisco) - SF Recreation & Parks

About the Role

The Cook (2654) is a journey-level position at Camp Mather, responsible for planning menus, preparing large quantities of food, ordering supplies, and managing kitchen operations. This role requires independent judgment and adherence to established procedures in a remote outdoor environment. The position is part of the SF Recreation & Parks team, serving camp guests in a rustic, high-altitude location.

What You'll Do

  • Plans menus and accommodates special diets
  • Prepares and cooks large variety of foods
  • Orders food and requisitions supplies
  • Directs and participates in cleaning the kitchen area, appliances and utensils
  • Estimates amount of groceries needed
  • Follows instructions and works according to established methods and procedures
  • Maintains records, routine reports, and related duties

What We're Looking For

  • Perform more difficult and responsible kitchen duties such as menu preparation, supply sourcing, forecasting, and administrative functions
  • Work both indoors and outdoors with exposure to sun and high temperatures
  • Regularly encounter bugs and insects
  • Work with various cleaning chemicals as part of the position requirements
  • Work five (5) days per week, with potential for 10–12 hour shifts or six-day workweeks (limited to 40 hours) during high season
  • Work weekends and evenings
  • Work mandatory Sunday and Monday shifts
  • Take one day off scheduled during the remainder of the week
  • Follow the policies as described in the Camp Mather 2026 Workplace Policies and Expectations
  • Secure own transportation to and from Camp Mather
  • Adapt to very limited cellular and Internet/Wi-Fi services

Work Mode

Onsite at Camp Mather, High Sierra near Yosemite National Park, about 3 hours east of San Francisco. Fixed schedule with mandatory Sunday and Monday work; one day off scheduled mid-week.
