Indiana Department of Correction / Madison State Hospital is hiring a Controller

About the Role

The Indiana Department of Correction is looking for a Controller to provide leadership within its Finance & Accounting Department. You will serve as the chief liaison to the State Board of Accounts and the State Comptroller’s Office for audit activity, accounting, travel, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and cash management. This role assists with policy development and provides control and oversight of the agency's financial and administrative functions.

What You'll Do

  • Manage the Accounting & Financial Reporting, Procurement, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Damage to State Property departments.
  • Manage the Monthly Close Process & Calendar, ensuring timely results including the agency’s monthly forecast and variance analysis.
  • Coordinate, compile, and distribute the CFO Book, a collection of monthly reports from all Finance Divisions.
  • Compile and perform quality assurance of the Finance Departments’ monthly Plan vs. Actual Metrics.
  • Act as a leader to initiate, analyze, recommend, and implement business solutions, working cross-functionally in pursuit of continuous improvement.
  • Manage special project financials related to initiatives like the Ohio River Bridges.
  • Establish short and long-term departmental goals, objectives, policies, and operating procedures.
  • Review and evaluate organizational effectiveness, goal determination, and strategic planning, making recommendations for improvement.
  • Develop and coordinate plans and policies, resources, mission, goals, vision, and expectations.
  • Provide guidance to agencies and the public regarding applicable laws and rules.
  • Supervise subordinate personnel including hiring, workload delegation, training, performance monitoring, and initiating corrective action.
  • Monitor the agency or program budget including revenues, expenditures, and projections.
  • Communicate with news and other media, responding to questions in an appropriate public relations manner.
  • Coordinate with other government officials on planning issues.
  • Coordinate, review, and evaluate the use of appropriate controls and standards for the agency.

  • Extensive knowledge of State programs and resources, public policy, and program evaluation.
  • Ability to develop and measure program outcomes.
  • Ability to create and maintain strong working relationships with key public and private government and business leaders.
  • Ability to identify problems, determine accuracy and relevance of information, and use sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives.
  • Ability to work with internal and external customers to assess needs, provide assistance, resolve problems, and satisfy expectations.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills with the ability to build relationships, establish credibility, and influence leaders at all levels.
  • Ability to make sound, well-informed, and objective decisions, perceiving the impact and implications of those decisions.

Team & Environment

You will provide direct supervision for one or more staff members.

  • Salary traditionally starts at $93,002.00 but may be commensurate with education or work experience.
