We're seeking a Community Engineer to cultivate, support, and maintain an inclusive technical community around PlanetScale's database platform. In this role, you'll serve as the developer community's primary representative, directly engaging with engineers building on PlanetScale, addressing technical queries, and generating educational content that enables developers to excel with MySQL, Vitess, and Postgres. What's the job to be done? Community Engagement - Actively participate across community platforms including Discord, Reddit, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, and other user gathering spaces - Provide comprehensive technical responses about databases, MySQL/Vitess, Postgres, and PlanetScale products - Engage in broader database and engineering communities where PlanetScale users are prominent - Monitor conversations to identify emerging trends, recurring questions, and content development opportunities Content Creation - Generate educational developer content derived from real-world conversations and field observations - Develop multi-format content: written tutorials, video demonstrations, livestreams, conference presentations, and meetup discussions - Transform complex database concepts into accessible, practical resources for developers across skill levels - Design beginner and intermediate-level code demonstrations and examples Community Programs - Identify and support community champions and power users - Collaborate with product engineering teams to collect and relay community insights - Represent PlanetScale at conferences, meetups, and community events (occasional travel required) These attributes best describe you: - Warm, empathetic, and personable in all interactions, genuinely passionate about developer success - Engineering background with hands-on application development and database experience - Comfortable creating content across multiple formats: writing, video, live presentations - Patient and thoughtful when addressing repetitive questions - Strong written and verbal communication skills What else will help you succeed: - Active participation in database or engineering communities - Ability to showcase previous work: blog posts, videos, conference talks, demos, or community contributions - Experience with Postgres and/or MySQL - Prior developer relations, developer advocacy, or community management experience Why PlanetScale We're redefining data management strategies for high-growth companies, collaborating with exciting brands across gaming, consumer tech, and B2B SaaS. Total Compensation and Pay Transparency An employee's total compensation encompasses base salary, benefits, and equity. Our Talent Acquisition team will gladly address further compensation inquiries during the interview process. Base salary range: $140,000 - $170,000 USD
