The MacArthur Justice Center (MJC) is seeking a Communications Intern for a 10-12-week summer opportunity in its Washington, D.C. office. This role requires a 40-hour weekly commitment, where you will build practical skills in strategic communications, public relations, and digital outreach in support of our mission.
What You'll Do
- Support the planning and execution of media outreach, including researching target reporters and tracking engagement.
- Draft or refine media outreach materials like press releases, media advisories, and pitches.
- Conduct research on criminal legal system issues to inform digital content, social media posts, and messaging.
- Monitor and track earned media coverage, updating the media hits tracker.
- Draft and update website content, newsletters, and digital resources.
- Support the creation of educational and outreach materials for public and media audiences.
- Participate in Communications team meetings, providing clear notes and supporting project coordination.
What We're Looking For
- Excellent writing and editing skills.
- Familiarity and experience with social media platforms including Instagram, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Suite, including Word and Excel.
- Self-starter who approaches assignments with curiosity, creativity, and openness to feedback.
- Open to learning new things, growing in the role, and receiving feedback as part of ongoing development.
- Good time management and ability to work within deadlines.
- Ability to work well both independently and as part of a team.
Nice to Have
- Preference for candidates who will be seniors or graduate students in the Fall 2026 semester studying public relations, communications, or journalism.
- Basic graphic design experience, particularly with Canva, or an interest in learning.
- Experience with WordPress is a plus.
