The University of Toronto is seeking a Business Services Officer to manage the day-to-day financial, human resources, and administrative functions for a significant client group. This includes supporting Vice-Presidential, shared service, and academic portfolios. You will serve as a trusted advisor on complex matters, ensuring policy compliance and contributing to the strategic operational goals of the university.
What You'll Do
- Advise unit leadership on complex financial and human resources matters.
- Ensure compliance with the university’s Guide to Financial Management and other relevant policies.
- Evaluate financial objectives and prepare or advise on divisional and departmental budgets.
- Prepare and analyze financial reports, comparing actual performance with projected results.
- Advise management on reasons for variations in financial performance.
- Provide guidance and support to staff on human resources and payroll administration.
- Manage daily operational processes for the client group, ensuring policy adherence.
- Solve problems independently and determine when to escalate issues appropriately.
- Exercise a high degree of sensitivity, responsiveness, and confidentiality.
- Identify opportunities for process improvement and initiate discussions on operational efficiencies.
- Support change management initiatives within the client group.
What We're Looking For
- A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience, including post-secondary coursework in accounting, finance, or business.
- Five (5) years of complex administrative and financial accounting experience.
- Experience with HR management in a unionized environment, including a strong working knowledge of Collective Agreements.
- Experience processing payroll for USW, CUPE, and PM/Confidential employee groups.
- Thorough knowledge of University budget processes, procurement policies, and financial, HR, and administrative policies, as well as relevant provincial legislation.
- Superior oral and written communication, interpersonal, organizational, and time management skills.
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft 365 applications, with advanced Excel skills required, including complex formulas, pivot tables, and data analysis.
- Strong HRIS and FIS experience.
- Demonstrated experience in financial management and excellent knowledge of financial accounting, reporting, and internal control procedures.
- A high degree of political acuity and judgment, with the ability to deal effectively with senior university officers and staff.
- Proven ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative as well as collaboratively within a team.
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy.
- Demonstrated ability to manage sensitive situations with professionalism and a solution-oriented approach, while maintaining strict confidentiality.
- Ability to summarize information, provide clear rationale for recommendations, and effectively communicate financial information to non-financial audiences.
- Ability to recognize inefficiencies, recommend practical improvements, and support implementation of process enhancements.

- Experience preferably in a university environment.
- Experience working in an academic unit.
- Experience using data visualization and business intelligence tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI) to support financial reporting and analysis.

- Classification: PM 2
- Hiring Zone: $83,560 - $97,486
- Broadband Salary Range: $83,560 - $139,264
