Practicebetter is hiring a Backend Tech Lead for a remote contract role. This is a 'build and lead by doing' position where you will define architecture and standards, deliver features end to end, and elevate the team’s focus on reliability, security, and delivery speed.
What You'll Do
- Harden CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions or Jenkins; build and test containers and deploy via Helm to AWS (EKS or ECS).
- Add lightweight bot protection: rate limits, IP allowlists, and abuse detection hooks.
- Implement observability: monitor latency and error budgets via CloudWatch + Grafana, structured logging, and tracing where needed.
- Conduct performance tuning: optimize DB indexes, caching strategy, queue throughput, and API response times.
- Own architecture decisions, keeping them pragmatic: 'simple first, scalable where it matters.'
- Drive code quality through reviews, standards, branching/release hygiene, and definition of done.
- Break down work, provide reliable estimates, unblock the team, and align with the PM/BA on scope.
- Mentor engineers and set a strong engineering culture around clarity and ownership.
What We're Looking For
- 3+ years building production systems.
- 2+ years in a lead or ownership role.
- Real experience running systems in production: CI/CD, Docker, monitoring, and incident response.
- Deep understanding of RBAC, session and authentication flows, and security fundamentals (OWASP-minded).
- Comfortable with async and event-driven patterns: queues, schedulers, retries, idempotency.
- Clear documentation skills, good judgment on tradeoffs, and keeping stakeholders informed.
- An upper-intermediate level of English or higher.
Nice to Have
- Background in RPA, UiPath, browser automation, or similar automation-heavy environments.
- Experience with AI / ML / LLM-enabled products, data extraction, or workflow automation.
- Python backend experience (FastAPI, Flask, or similar).
Technical Stack
- .NET, PostgreSQL, Redis, MongoDB
- OpenAPI 3, GitHub Actions
- SQS, EventBridge/Lambda, Celery
Work Mode
This is a fully remote, contract position open to candidates globally.
