Company 1 - The Manufacturers Life Insurance Company is seeking two experienced litigation lawyers to join the Canadian Litigation team as AVP & Senior Counsel. You will be a key leader, reporting to the VP & Chief Counsel Litigation, Canada, and support our Canadian business units by providing practical, timely legal representation and strategic advice on disputes and regulatory matters.
What You'll Do
- Contribute as a member of the Canada Law team by bringing your experience and collaborative work ethic to deliver practical solutions.
- Collaborate with business partners to support our business strategy and objectives.
- Provide legal opinions, advice, and recommendations to various business units.
- Lead a highly accomplished team of lawyers in the Common Law Provinces.
- Coach, mentor, and develop team members for in-role growth and succession planning.
- Handle recruiting, performance evaluation, goal setting, and compensation for your team.
- Manage a litigation caseload, including complex and high-risk matters.
- Independently manage all aspects of litigation, including discoveries, mediations, motions, and trials.
- Oversee the retaining, instructing, and managing of external counsel when necessary.
- Coordinate leadership objectives with the Litigation Leadership Team for a unified approach.
- Support the Chief Counsel Litigation, Canada, in providing legal services and team development.
- Work closely with colleagues across the broader Manulife legal and compliance team as required.
What We're Looking For
- Law degree and admission to a provincial Bar.
- At least 10 years of proven litigation experience.
- Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively under substantial time pressure.
- Ability to quickly assess client needs and provide timely support.
- Strong analytical, organizational, and priority management skills.
- Proven negotiation and advocacy skills.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills with the ability to influence at all levels.
- Enthusiasm for using technology and proficiency in virtual litigation environments.
- Demonstration of outstanding client service, analytical skills, and good judgment.
- Proven track record of collaborating and adapting to evolving demands.
- Proven leadership in building and maintaining strong, credible working relationships.
Team & Environment
You will report to the VP & Chief Counsel Litigation, Canada, and lead a team of lawyers in the Common Law Provinces.
