The University of Chicago is looking for an Assistant Director, Operations to manage the strategic and day-to-day facilities needs of undergraduate residence halls. You will play a key role in ensuring secure, well-maintained environments that foster a sense of belonging and support the University's academic mission.
What You'll Do
- Supervise unionized clerical staff, including hiring, training, and evaluating performance to ensure effective delivery of mail, building repairs, and access control.
- Manage residence hall furnishings and equipment inventories, repairs, and replacement.
- Provide financial oversight of operating budgets, proposing budgets that meet long and short-term facility needs and align with strategic objectives.
- Coordinate service delivery for residence hall openings, closings, and special events.
- Participate in planning for capital projects, provide logistical coordination for contractors, and communicate on performance and timelines.
- Represent Housing and Residence Life on University committees and develop partnerships with UChicago Dining, Facilities Services, and International House.
- Develop facilities maintenance policies and procedures, and plan renovation projects to be completed on time and within budget.
- Coordinate with staff from other units and supervise the work of contractors and facilities staff.
- Participate in an on-call duty rotation for after-hour emergencies and attend bi-weekly staff meetings that require later evening hours.
What We're Looking For
- College or university degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
Nice to Have
- Experience supervising staff.
- Customer service and vendor relations experience.
- Valid driver's license upon offer of employment and ability to pass the University's motor vehicle records process.
- Knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Word.
- Ability to learn a range of position-related software applications.
- Knowledge of industry standards for residential building services, repairs, and maintenance.
- Quality decision-making, accountability, employee engagement, partnership, collaboration, performance execution, and strategic agility.

You will work in close collaboration with Facilities Services, live-in residential staff and faculty, and professional Housing and Residence Life staff.
Benefits & Compensation
- Compensation: $63,750.00 - $78,000.00
- Health, retirement, and paid time off benefits.
