The City of Canton is seeking a Telecommunicator to join our emergency communications center. In this critical role, you will be responsible for the health, lives, safety, and property of our citizens by handling calls and dispatching resources.

What You'll Do

Receive telephone calls from the public concerning both emergency and non-emergency situations.
Dispatch all appropriate safety and services personnel and equipment by radio or phone as required.
Maintain records, logs, forms, and other essential materials.
Disperse non-related or non-emergency calls by providing callers with appropriate information or referrals.
Maintain the working area, radio, and telephone equipment.
Assist in training new employees as needed.
Perform all other necessary related duties as required or directed.

What We're Looking For

U.S. citizen or possess a permanent resident card.
High school graduate or possess a G.E.D.
At least 18 years of age.
Valid driver's license.
Ability to be reached by telephone.
No record of criminal convictions that would compromise access to police records information.
Must pass an online typing test with a score of 40 WPM.
Must pass the National Dispatcher Selection Test (NDST) with a 70% passing score.
Clear, pleasing voice and excellent hearing.
Mental alertness and a temperament suited to the position.
Ability to remain alert during periods of inactivity, routine, and overload.
Willingness to accept work assignments on day, night, or all-night shifts, weekends, and holidays.

Hourly compensation follows a step schedule: Step 1: $23.76/hour, Step 2: $25.37/hour, Step 3: $26.96/hour, Step 4: $28.78/hour, Step 5: $31.60/hour.
