Temporal Technologies is hiring a Staff Software Engineer for the Compute team building Temporal Cloud. In this role, you will solve complex platform problems to make compute transparent, elastic, safe-by-default, observable, and multi-cloud. You will invent new managed compute primitives, own services on the hot path of task execution, and lead through influence across teams.
What You'll Do
- Create new managed compute primitives with crisp abstractions, clean APIs, and an extension story across compute providers.
- Design self-optimizing autoscaling systems that scale worker fleets safely and predictably.
- Define the Open Source Server ↔ Cloud boundary for compute capabilities, keeping the architecture cohesive.
- Architect, build, and operate services on the hot path of task execution where performance and correctness are customer-visible.
- Deliver real-world cloud integrations involving IAM boundaries, secure credentials handling, networking constraints, and quotas.
- Make operability a feature through SLOs, tracing/metrics, load testing, incident reviews, and continuous hardening.
- Ship end-to-end, considering API design, rollout strategy, backwards compatibility, and long-term maintenance.
- Raise the bar through design docs, strong reviews, pragmatic technical leadership, and mentorship.
- Lead through influence across teams to land coherent platform changes.
What We're Looking For
- Significant experience building distributed systems or multi-tenant platform services.
- Strong systems fundamentals in concurrency, performance, reliability, and failure-mode thinking.
- A record of shipping platform primitives used by other engineers or customers.
- Comfort owning outcomes like SLOs, incident response, and improving on-call quality.
- Excellent written communication and crisp tradeoff thinking.
Nice to Have
- Experience building cloud infrastructure platforms.
- Familiarity with IAM/security boundaries for cross-account execution models.
- Having built Kubernetes controllers, CRDs, or operated heterogeneous worker fleets.
- Go experience is a plus.

You'll be part of the Compute team for Temporal Cloud, working across teams including Server, SDKs, Security, and the Control Plane.
