BlackSky is hiring a Staff Software Engineer, Image Operations to build and maintain the production pipeline that processes raw satellite pixels into finished imagery products. You will report to the Lead Image Operations Engineer within our hybrid hardware-software Imaging Department.

What You'll Do

Independently design and implement new features and updates for BlackSky’s core image processing system.
Develop and lead automated processes for monitoring service quality and regression testing.
Take an active role in testing, debugging, and documenting implemented software functionality.
Analyze designs with an eye towards creating scalable, maintainable, and performant software solutions.
Participate in design sessions and team meetings, providing insightful feedback.
Assist with operational tasks to ensure stability in production environments.
Proactively identify problems with requirements and communicate these issues early.
Mentor engineers and scientists on software development best practices and performance.
Engage with stakeholders across the company to solve cross-functional challenges.

What We're Looking For

Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
A minimum of 10 years of professional software development experience.
Experience processing geospatial or astronomical imagery using libraries like NumPy, Pandas, OpenCV, or GDAL.
Participation in an enterprise software development environment.
Extensive expertise in Python and asyncio methodologies.
Experience with cloud and cloud-like computing environments (AWS Batch / AWS Lambda, Kubernetes / ARGO).
Expertise in agile development methodologies, git, and CI/CD.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Must be a US-born citizen.

Nice to Have

Advanced degree in a relevant field.
Experience with OGC and/or STAC specifications.
Big Data experience (Hadoop, Spark, Kafka).
Proficiency with C++, C, and Cython in addition to Python.
Experience developing Go applications.
Experience with GPUs.

Compensation: $160,000-$180,000 per year for Seattle, WA (final package dependent on background and education).
