Standard Bots is seeking a Staff Functional Safety Engineer to be the technical owner of the functional safety program for our production robots. You will lead all aspects of the safety lifecycle—from hazard analysis to final certification—ensuring our electromechanical systems meet rigorous standards while coordinating across hardware, software, and manufacturing teams.
What You'll Do
- Own and run the Functional Safety Management (FSM) system, including the safety plan, policy, and strategy for compliance with standards like ISO 13849 and IEC 61508.
- Lead hazard identification and risk assessments (HAZOP, FMEA/HARA), maintaining a live HARA that addresses hazards from assembly through dismantling.
- Define, approve, and document Safety-Related Control System (SRCS) architectures, allocating safety functions and specifying constraints to meet target Performance Levels.
- Execute reliability analysis and FMEDA, performing calculations for MTTF_d, Diagnostic Coverage, and Common Cause Failure using tools like SISTEMA or Pascal.
- Manage Verification & Validation (V&V) plans, including fault-injection and safety validation, ensuring traceability and coverage for all safety functions.
- Collaborate on the safety software lifecycle, ensuring adherence to IEC 61508-3 best practices and coaching developers on safe coding.
- Lead interdisciplinary teams to integrate safety requirements into design, prototype, and production, advising on safety-critical hardware and schematics.
- Manage external certification execution as the primary technical interface with bodies like Intertek, coordinating reviews and delivering the Technical File.
- Drive competency and culture by building the safety competency matrix, identifying training needs, and ensuring FSM governance.
- Manage documentation and traceability using tools like DOORS or Jama, maintaining rigorous configuration management and "Information for Use" documentation.
- Facilitate manufacturability and production readiness for safety systems with manufacturing and supply chain teams.
- Manage the safety program budget and schedule, building relationships with external consultants and vendors.
What We're Looking For
- BS in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, Systems Engineering, or equivalent.
- 7+ years of hands-on functional safety engineering experience for complex electromechanical systems, with a track record leading safety activities from concept through certification.
- Deep familiarity with machinery and functional safety standards (ISO 13849-1/2, ISO 12100, IEC 61508, etc.) and experience applying them to system architectures.
- Proven track record delivering products through formal certification with NRTLs (Intertek, TÜV, UL), including managing safety reviews and assembling Technical Files.
- Ability and willingness to be in-person as needed at our manufacturing and test facility in Glen Cove, NY.
