About the Role

Our Future Health is hiring a Staff Engineer (Research Enablement) to act as Tech Lead for a new squad dedicated to empowering researchers. You will play a key role in provisioning the tooling and resources that enable health insights from the Our Future Health resource, collaborating closely with partner DNAnexus and leading internal development.

What You'll Do

  • Act as Tech Lead for the Research Enablement squad.
  • Lead the development and integration of products and services built internally.
  • Play a key role in collaboration with the DNAnexus team on the Trusted Research Environment.
  • Operationally manage software components once live, including observability, logging, metrics, error reporting, debugging and live incident management.

What We're Looking For

  • Led the architectural design of systems.
  • Knowledge and experience of building cloud-hosted consumer web applications and backend services using open source technologies like Node.js, Ruby on Rails, or Python in a start-up or scale-up environment.
  • Experience building backend systems for data movement, processing, storage, and provisioning services for non-technical user data access.
  • Comfortable working with Infrastructure as Code, ideally with knowledge of Terraform.
  • Knowledge of good data modelling and design patterns; in-depth knowledge of relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL) and familiarity with other data store types.
  • Expertise in modern, agile development practices like code review, TDD, CI/CD and pairing using tools like Git and GitHub.
  • Experience of operationally managing live software components.
  • Experience of working with sensitive personal data.
  • Strong experience working and collaborating with vendors/partners.
  • Experience working in/with cross-functional teams consisting of engineers, product, UX and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to communicate with stakeholders and audiences at different levels.
  • Understanding of operational, security, and legal factors in solution design, with ability to articulate trade-offs.
  • Experience working in small, growing organisations with a high degree of ambiguity.
  • Strong understanding of software quality principles and practices.
  • Experience in mentoring and coaching less experienced engineers.
  • Comfortable in facilitating technical discussions, encouraging collaboration and providing direction.

Nice to Have

  • Prior experience with Azure (ideally), AWS or GCP.
