eBay is looking for a Staff Engineer Mobile Android to architect and develop outstanding mobile experiences that empower our hobbyists. You will provide technical leadership for mobile engineering across the organization, influencing architecture, standards, and guidelines. Your strategic vision and leadership will be key in ensuring our mobile experience is at the forefront of technology.
What You'll Do
- Provide technical leadership for mobile engineering across the organization, influencing architecture, standards, and guidelines.
- Build, architect, and hands-on develop high-quality native mobile solutions that scale to millions of users.
- Drive the mobile platform architecture, ensuring security, reliability, performance, and an outstanding user experience.
- Define and influence the mobile technical roadmap, balancing short-term delivery with long-term platform health.
- Partner closely with product managers, designers, backend engineers, cloud platform teams, and ML engineers to deliver cohesive, end-to-end features.
- Lead initiatives that improve development velocity, quality, observability, and operational excellence.
- Identify technical risks early, communicate tradeoffs clearly, and implement mitigation strategies.
- Champion guidelines for development, testing, deployment, monitoring, and on-call readiness.
- Architect on-device, cloud-assisted, and hybrid AI solutions, making informed tradeoffs around performance, privacy, battery usage, and offline behavior.
- Ship product features capabilities using feature flags, experimentation frameworks, and gradual rollouts, and iterate based on real-world usage and feedback.
What We're Looking For
- 12+ years of experience building native mobile applications.
- Deep, hands-on expertise in Android (Kotlin required).
- Deep understanding of mobile architecture, build patterns, lifecycle management, and performance optimization.
- Experience building secure, consumer-facing mobile apps with high availability and scalability.
- Hands-on experience with WebView integrations alongside native UI components.
- Experience with Computer Vision and real-time frame processing.
- Experience with shared C++ components across iOS and Android.
- Experience integrating AI/ML capabilities into production mobile applications.
- Strong understanding of secure data handling & privacy considerations, including PII, consent management, and regional compliance requirements.
- Proven ability to lead through influence, mentor engineers, and raise the technical bar across teams.
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain technical decisions, tradeoffs, risks, and opportunities to both technical and non-technical collaborators.
- Experience working in Agile or Scrum environments.
- Ability to conduct research, analyze results, and apply findings to real-world product decisions.
- Experience participating in or leading Tier 4 on-call support for critical systems.
