PayPal is hiring a Staff Development Engineer in Test - Android

Lead the development and implementation of AI-native Android test automation systems. Provide technical leadership across engineering teams to advance quality practices. Collaborate with cross-functional partners to integrate AI-driven testing solutions. Drive innovation in test infrastructure with a focus on scalability and reliability. Ensure alignment of testing strategies across mobile platforms and engineering domains

Responsibilities

  • Lead projects and coordinate engineering teams to achieve program and service objectives
  • Define technical direction and assign tasks to engineers for efficient execution
  • Improve existing systems and processes to enhance efficiency and quality
  • Apply judgment to balance trade-offs between time, quality, complexity, and risk
  • Identify recurring patterns and develop generalized, scalable solutions
  • Establish and refine standards for engineering rigor in collaboration with leadership
  • Design and implement a reliable, maintainable Android test automation framework using Espresso or equivalent, optimized for AI integration
  • Partner with ML and platform engineers to co-develop execution hooks and test data systems for generative AI use in test creation and analysis
  • Instrument test frameworks to collect high-fidelity data that supports both traditional and AI-driven testing across the development lifecycle
  • Integrate test execution, reporting, and dynamic test selection with CI/CD pipelines using Harness
  • Build and scale tooling for fast, repeatable functional, integration, and end-to-end Android testing at every commit and release
  • Develop practices for AI-driven test selection and prioritization to enhance continuous testing efficiency
  • Promote best practices that reduce late-stage bug detection and increase confidence in release readiness
  • Enable adaptive regression testing by incorporating AI-generated test cases into automation infrastructure
  • Automate non-functional testing including performance, memory, and security assessments for Android
  • Create screenshot and video comparison systems with log capture to quickly detect UI and functional regressions
  • Mentor engineers and provide thought leadership in test automation and AI-native quality engineering
  • Contribute to organizational playbooks and enablement programs to scale AI-powered testing strategies

Requirements

  • Minimum of 8 years of software engineering experience with a focus on mobile test automation and developer tooling, including at least 2 years designing new test infrastructure
  • Extensive experience with native Android automation tools such as Espresso and UI Automator, including integration with device farms
  • Proven ability to design and extend test frameworks for high observability and signal fidelity
  • Experience collaborating with ML/AI teams or integrating generative AI systems for test generation, triage, or analytics
  • Proficiency in CI/CD platforms, particularly Harness, for building automated test pipelines and release controls
  • Demonstrated technical leadership at the staff level, including mentoring engineers and shaping organization-wide testing practices

Compensation

The base salary for this role varies by location and experience. In San Jose, California, the expected annual range is $176,500.00 - $262,350.00. Additional compensation may include an annual performance bonus, equity, or other incentives.

Work Arrangement

Hybrid — San Jose, California — 3 days in office for collaboration, 2 days remote or at employee's discretion, supporting a balanced work model.
