About the Role

Ashby is hiring its first in-house Sr. Legal Counsel to be a pivotal contributor to the company's growth. As the first dedicated legal expert within our team of 220+ people, you will shape and scale our legal framework while collaborating with leadership across the business.

What You'll Do

  • Review, draft, and negotiate a wide range of commercial agreements including customer agreements, Order Forms, and SaaS agreements.
  • Proactively develop and iterate Ashby’s Terms of Service.
  • Lead international privacy law compliance, including reviewing and negotiating Data Processing Agreements (DPAs).
  • Advise on privacy and data protection issues with demonstrated experience complying with GDPR and CCPA obligations.
  • Work closely with the product team to advise on legal and compliance considerations for new products and features.
  • Collaborate with the PMM team to create external-facing collateral outlining Ashby’s compliance approach.
  • Partner with the Security team to respond to security incidents and draft related communications.
  • Stay up to date on relevant industry regulations, particularly AI regulation in hiring and evolving privacy laws.
  • Handle a wide range of legal matters as they arise, including IP, employment, global expansion, and fundraising.
  • Identify and advocate for solutions that proactively address legal risks across the business.
  • Develop internal legal training and FAQs.
  • Manage relationships with external counsel across commercial, privacy, corporate, and employment areas.
  • Help shape the legal function’s operations and structure, identifying opportunities for innovation through technology.

What We're Looking For

  • Juris Doctor from an accredited law school.
  • Active license to practice law in the US.
  • 6-8 years of legal experience across a top-tier law firm and in-house at a fast-growing startup.
  • Strong understanding of and experience advising on privacy laws: GDPR and CCPA.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle diverse legal matters independently while maintaining excellent judgment and managing multiple priorities.
  • Clear communication style that translates legal advice into plain English and actionable next steps.

Nice to Have

  • Prior experience as an early legal hire in a fast-growing SaaS or AI company.

Team & Environment

You will be Ashby's first dedicated Legal Counsel, reporting to Chief of Staff Katie and working closely with her and other leadership. You'll collaborate with teams across the 220+ person company globally.
