Expedia Group is looking for a Senior Manager, Software Development Engineering to lead and grow a high-performing team. You will be responsible for delivering scalable, resilient services that power flight search, pricing, and shopping experiences across our global platform.
What You'll Do
- Lead and grow a high-performing engineering team delivering services for flight search, pricing, and shopping.
- Set clear expectations, define team goals, and drive accountability for delivery, quality, and operational excellence.
- Define and evolve the technical direction and architecture for multiple services within the Air Shopping Platform.
- Provide hands-on oversight of system design, API design, and data modeling for critical, production services.
- Drive predictable delivery across multiple domains, partnering with Product, Analytics, and Connectivity teams.
- Foster an inclusive engineering culture centered on psychological safety, collaboration, and continuous learning.
- Attract, hire, and onboard diverse talent while coaching and mentoring engineers.
- Champion modern engineering practices and AI-driven tooling to improve productivity and reliability.
- Safely integrate and operate AI/ML-enabled solutions to improve search relevance and personalization.
- Own engineering standards and best practices across your area and influence adjacent teams.
- Use data and metrics (e.g., SLIs/SLOs, delivery throughput) to run the business of engineering and drive improvement.
- Manage budgets and headcount plans, making thoughtful trade-offs between scope, quality, timelines, and cost.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent professional experience.
- 8+ years of relevant software development experience and 3+ years of people management experience.
- Strong foundation and extensive experience developing Java/Kotlin applications and services.
- Demonstrated success managing teams delivering complex, distributed systems or large-scale web services.
- Strong foundation in large-scale system design, APIs, data modeling, and cloud-native architectures (e.g., AWS, GCP, or Azure).
- Proven experience running agile software development processes and driving operational excellence.
- Experience building inclusive, engaged teams and effectively navigating difficult people situations.
Nice to Have
- Experience managing teams in a global, matrixed technology organization.
- Background in ecommerce, travel, or large-scale consumer/marketplace platforms.
- Deep familiarity with Information Retrieval techniques (e.g., Elasticsearch/Lucene, vector search).
- Track record of driving architectural modernization for large, distributed systems.
- Demonstrated ability to lead change and engineering productivity improvements.
- Experience partnering with Security, Privacy, and Compliance to embed secure delivery practices.
- Excellent communication skills for representing engineering in senior forums.
