Canva is hiring a Senior Machine Learning Engineer - Canva AI (AU remote)

Canva is looking for a Senior Machine Learning Engineer to help reimagine how people interact with our product. You'll work within the Canva AI Group, building the intelligence behind our conversational experiences. This is a deeply hands-on role where you'll write code, shape features, and collaborate with software engineers to take ideas from prototype to production.

What You'll Do

• Build a flexible and scalable conversational AI platform designed to serve diverse use cases without custom implementations.
• Fine-tune and evaluate LLM-based models to improve performance, efficiency, and user experience.
• Contribute to platform engineering across both ML and backend systems in this highly hands-on role.
• Explore integrations with industry-standard tools and best practices like MCP and A2A.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and deliver impactful AI features.
• Mentor other Machine Learning Engineers and lift engineering quality and excellence.

What We're Looking For

• A strong bias for action and a product-minded approach to engineering.
• A love for getting hands-on, working side-by-side with software engineers, writing Python production code, solving complex problems, and using Java Backend where needed.
• Deep experience building and deploying ML-powered products, particularly in conversational AI.
• Enjoy influencing roadmap decisions and thrive in ambiguous environments.
• Passion for keeping up with the rapidly evolving AI space and proactively experimenting with emerging techniques.
