Northwestern Memorial Healthcare is hiring a Rehab Nurse Technician to join our interdisciplinary rehabilitation care team. In this role, you will support interventions for patients with severe chronic conditions and complex disabilities, working under the direction and supervision of a professional registered nurse.
What You'll Do
- Collect and report pertinent physiological, psychological, and functional data.
- Assist and instruct patients with personal hygiene and activities of daily living.
- Perform preventive skin care programs and report changes in skin integrity.
- Assist patients with bladder and bowel training programs, including performing straight catheterization.
- Obtain and document vital signs/pulse oximetry and communicate reportable values.
- Assist patients with transfers and mobility activities using appropriate techniques and devices.
- Assist patients with application of assistive devices and prosthetics/orthoses.
- Assist patients with meal completion, pass trays, and calculate/document calorie counts and intake/output.
- Assist patient with 1:1 feeds and cue patients with dysphagia on swallowing strategies.
- Answer and triage patient call lights.
- Proactively set up patient room for therapy readiness.
- Obtain weekly and daily patient weights as ordered.
- Collect laboratory specimens as directed.
- Obtain blood glucose measurements and 12-lead EKGs as ordered.
- Transfer patient from wall to tank oxygen or tube feedings for therapy preparation.
- Provide supervision and activities, or restraint use, for high-risk patients.
- Perform regular comfort and environmental safety rounding.
- Provide de-escalation techniques for agitated and aggressive patient behaviors.
- Serve as a safety 1:1 for patients as needed.
- Maintain and organize unit equipment inventories.
- Preceptor to new employees and partner with RNT/certified nursing students.
- Serve on Cardiac Arrest team performing high quality CPR.
- Participate in bedside handoff.
- Participate in system and local quality improvement goals and data collection.
- Assist in maintenance of unit readiness to meet regulatory standards.
- Maintain therapeutic relationships and communicate effectively with patients and staff.
- Contribute to safe, effective patient care including use of safety devices.
- Follow Infection Control policies and procedures.
- Rotate to all units based on patient care needs and adjust to changes in policy and patient population.
What We're Looking For
- High School degree or GED equivalent.
- Current Nursing Assistant certification (C.N.A.) OR current enrollment in an RN Nursing Program with successful completion of two clinical rotations.
- Maintains current CPR certification.
- Basic math skills.
- Ability to communicate with a wide variety of people and provide highest level of customer service.
- Understanding and support of Northwestern Medicine’s Mission and Values.
- Flexibility and ability to manage work in a changing environment.
- 12-lead EKG competency completed within 6 months of employment.
Nice to Have
- 2-5 years work experience in a rehabilitation hospital, acute care hospital, or skilled nursing facility.
