This role contributes to transmission planning and interconnection strategy, delivering technical insights for project feasibility and early-stage decision-making. The position is based in Houston, TX and reports to the Director of Transmission Strategy.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct transmission planning studies such as power flow, contingency (N‑1), short circuit, and voltage/reactive analyses to ensure system reliability and accommodate growth.
  • Develop and assess transmission upgrade options to resolve thermal, voltage, and stability limitations identified in planning studies.
  • Support generator and load interconnection evaluations, including impact assessments and recommendations for mitigation measures.
  • Assist in long-term transmission planning by integrating load projections, generation assumptions, and policy-driven scenarios.
  • Produce technical reports, study documentation, and planning recommendations for internal teams, utilities, ISOs/RTOs, and regulatory bodies.
  • Collaborate with operations, project development, engineering teams, and external utilities to align planning assumptions with actual grid conditions.
  • Ensure compliance with NERC, regional reliability, and transmission planning standards through accurate modeling and thorough documentation.
  • Maintain and update transmission system models to reflect current and projected conditions across various planning cases.
  • Engage in stakeholder meetings, planning working groups, and technical discussions with regional entities such as utilities, consultants, and ISOs/RTOs.
  • Analyze and apply planning criteria, interconnection requirements, and tariff provisions relevant to transmission development.
  • Deliver technical input during early project phases to inform routing, equipment sizing, and cost estimation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited institution, with a focus on Power Systems.
  • 3 to 5 years of professional experience in transmission planning, interconnection processes, or a related field, or relevant advanced degree.
  • Proven understanding of power grid planning and electric market fundamentals, with hands-on experience using at least one major grid analysis tool such as PSS/E, PSLF, Powergem TARA, or PowerWorld Simulator.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with utility and ISO representatives, external engineering firms, and cross-functional internal teams.

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with HVDC systems, substation layouts, transmission line design principles, thermal ratings, and cost estimation methods at the planning level.
  • Advanced degree in Electrical Engineering or an MBA is preferred.
  • Business-oriented mindset with adaptability to thrive in a fast-moving environment with evolving priorities.
