The Swiss Federal Administration is seeking a PhD Candidate - Machine Learning for Sustainable Grassland Management. In this role, you will develop machine learning approaches to understand and manage grassland systems sustainably, analyzing remote sensing data and studying climate and land use effects. You will join an organization focused on the sustainable use of natural resources, where interdisciplinary networking is essential.
What You'll Do
- Develop new approaches for better understanding and more sustainable management of grassland systems at the landscape level.
- Analyze remote sensing data, including satellite data and time series, using machine learning methods.
- Combine remote sensing and environmental data to analyze the effects of climate change and land use on grassland systems in Switzerland.
- Write scientific publications and present results at international conferences.
- Contribute to the development of the Swiss soil observation and agroecosystem analysis platform.
What We're Looking For
- A university degree (master's or equivalent) in environmental engineering, computer science, geography, remote sensing, environmental systems science, or a related field.
- Very good programming skills, ideally Python, and proven experience in the field of machine learning.
- Strong interest in applied questions in the fields of agriculture, ecophysiology, or geography.
- A solution-oriented approach, personal motivation, structured working method, and enjoyment of teamwork and interdisciplinary exchange.
- Knowledge of two official languages and English.
