Role Overview
Design and manage outside plant infrastructure for telecommunications networks, focusing on both copper and fiber systems. This position supports the full lifecycle of OSP projects—from initial planning and engineering to permitting, field coordination, and construction oversight. The work involves frequent field visits, collaboration with public and private stakeholders, and adherence to regulatory and technical standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop engineering plans for aerial, buried, and conduit-based network facilities
- Conduct on-site surveys to gather data for network design and construction
- Produce and evaluate engineering drawings, cable counts, and loop loss analyses
- Prepare and submit permit applications to local, state, and federal agencies
- Coordinate with municipalities and transportation departments on road and infrastructure projects
- Work alongside utility companies to resolve conflicts and plan joint-use arrangements
- Oversee contractor performance to ensure projects stay on schedule and within budget
- Support service expansions, dark fiber deployments, and infrastructure repairs
- Maintain accurate records in engineering databases including FROGS (CAD), Varasset, and SiteTracker
- Respond to plant damage reports and service-related network changes
- Conduct quality inspections and support regulatory compliance efforts
- Prepare technical reports, correspondence, and project documentation
Qualifications
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in telecommunications network engineering, with a focus on outside plant systems
- Proven background in permitting processes and coordination with regulatory bodies
- Experience managing multiple concurrent projects with strong organizational skills
- Familiarity with CAD-based engineering tools and asset management platforms
- Working knowledge of fiber optic and copper network design principles
- Ability to communicate effectively with contractors, government officials, and internal teams
- Understanding of construction practices and safety standards for OSP environments
Technical Environment
Proficiency in FROGS, Varasset, SiteTracker, and CAD software is required for accurate design and recordkeeping.
Work Environment
This is an onsite role with regular travel to project sites. Mileage is reimbursed. Fieldwork includes coordination with contractors and inspections of infrastructure in varied environments.
