General Medicine is hiring a Mobile Engineer

The Mobile Engineer will be the first hire to develop and scale a native mobile application using React Native, playing a central role in shaping its architecture and integration with native platforms. This position requires close collaboration with design, operations, and clinical stakeholders while working in a fast-moving, ambiguous environment to deliver a unified product across mobile and web.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and scale a healthcare-focused mobile application using React Native
  • Lead the development of the mobile app from initial setup
  • Make critical architectural choices that guide future development
  • Establish reusable patterns and standards for the engineering team
  • Implement native functionality using Swift or Kotlin for features like HealthKit, push notifications, and video calling
  • Contribute to the Next.js web frontend to maintain a consistent user experience
  • Create detailed product requirements documents
  • Use SQL to evaluate and optimize feature performance
  • Take full ownership of quality assurance processes
  • Operate effectively in a setting with high uncertainty and evolving requirements
  • Collaborate closely with design, operations, and clinical teams

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of professional mobile application development experience
  • Proven production-level experience with React Native
  • Solid knowledge of native iOS or Android development using Swift or Kotlin
  • Ability to work comfortably in either Swift or Kotlin environments
  • Strong proficiency in TypeScript and React
  • Hands-on experience with Expo, including build systems, over-the-air updates, and native module configuration
  • Experience designing shared code architectures between mobile and web, or a well-formed approach to doing so

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with modern backend technologies such as Ruby on Rails and Postgres

Work Arrangement

hybrid — San Francisco, CA (near Market and Spear St), Boston, MA (Central Square, Cambridge) — Minimum of 3 days per week in office, ideally 4 or 5
