About the Role

Washington University in St. Louis is hiring a Laboratory Animal Technician I for its Comparative Medicine team. You will provide and document essential care for rodent species, following established SOPs and regulations to directly support research and teaching missions. A rotating weekend and holiday work schedule is required.

What You'll Do

  • Provide and document daily husbandry care to rodents, including supplying feed, water, clean cages, and enrichment.
  • Sanitize and maintain rodent colony rooms by sweeping, mopping, and disinfecting all areas, rotating cages and equipment according to schedule.
  • Monitor animal behavior, illness, or death and report observations to the Supervisor, Facility Manager, or DCM Veterinarian promptly.
  • Maintain accurate record keeping for daily animal census and room sanitation activities.

What We're Looking For

  • High school diploma or equivalent certification, or a combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to obtain the Animal Care Learning Program - Purina Institute certification within 6 months.
  • No specific prior work experience is required.

Nice to Have

  • Associate degree.
  • Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT) certification from AALAS.
  • At least 1 year of laboratory animal care work experience.
  • Skills in biomedical research, communication, positive thinking, quality care, Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) adherence, and writing documentation.
