DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan, part of Tenet Healthcare, is hiring a Lab Assistant. In this role, you will work under general supervision to perform specific pre-analytical and post-analytical laboratory tasks with accuracy. You will process information, interact with patients and healthcare professionals, and maintain the lab work area and instruments, supporting a culture committed to safety, excellence, and teamwork.
What You'll Do
- Prioritize incoming specimens and process patient specimens in accordance with department safety and OSHA guidelines.
- May draw blood samples from patients based on physician orders and verify patient identification.
- Generate and attach labels to specimen/blood samples; may perform specimen processing and aliquoting.
- Ensure specimen integrity by verifying patient identification and checking sample suitability for the requested test.
- Accurately enter and review laboratory test data in the laboratory computer system; detect and correct errors.
- Communicate with patients to explain procedures and/or answer routine questions from healthcare professionals.
- Maintain a neat and clean work area; stock storage areas with supplies and perform inventory tasks.
- May perform transportation duties (e.g., deliver specimens and reports); time stamp or computer verify all laboratory requests.
- May conduct routine inspection, maintenance, and quality control checks on equipment.
- May prepare patients for and/or administer tolerance tests or other tests specific to the assigned area.
- Perform a variety of clerical duties such as answering phones, scheduling appointments, and maintaining records.
- Self-monitor your individual work behavior and performance to make improvements.
- Comply with departmental safety policies, procedures, and OSHA guidelines.
- Check organizational communication daily (e.g., Outlook, laboratory software, posted notices).
What We're Looking For
- A high school diploma or equivalent is required.
- Six (6) months of experience in medical training, and/or certification in a health care environment or related science field (e.g., Lab Assistant, Medical Assistant, Nursing Assistant, Phlebotomist, or Health Science studies).
Nice to Have
- Basic studies in medical terminology or a related health science field.
- Customer service experience in a service environment.
- For Phlebotomists: Phlebotomy Certification is preferred.
