SAOTA was looking for a Junior Architectural Researcher

A forward-thinking architectural practice is seeking a detail-oriented Junior Architectural Researcher to join its Resource Centre based in Cape Town. This hybrid-position blends remote and in-office work, supporting project teams through in-depth research on materials, construction technologies, and architectural systems.

Key Responsibilities

You will investigate current and emerging products and methods in response to project needs, sourcing solutions from around the world with sound judgment and creativity. Your work will directly inform design decisions, requiring a strong grasp of technical specifications and an eye for aesthetic alignment with the firm’s design philosophy.

Contributing to both physical and digital collections, you’ll help refine and expand the firm’s sample and information library, ensuring it remains current, well-documented, and accessible. You’ll also assist in building a vetted global network of suppliers and manufacturers, focusing on regional relevance—considering availability, performance, and quality.

Regular engagement with international publications and industry contacts will allow you to surface emerging trends and innovations. You’ll communicate findings clearly and concisely, acting as a reliable point of support for design teams navigating complex material choices.

What We’re Looking For

  • Professional architectural qualification required
  • Minimum of three years’ experience in architectural practice, with direct involvement in material specification
  • Strong technical knowledge of building systems and construction methods
  • Ability to follow documented processes and communicate updates effectively
  • Fluency in spoken and written English
  • Reliable high-speed internet connection (minimum 20Mbps upload/download)
  • Familiarity with architectural resource libraries is a plus

Work Environment

This role operates in a hybrid mode, allowing flexibility between home and office settings. You must be based in Cape Town and able to meet in person when needed. The ideal candidate is self-driven, collaborative, and deeply curious about materials and how they shape built environments.

Success in this role means balancing initiative with accuracy, maintaining clear communication, and contributing to a culture of excellence, resourcefulness, and shared knowledge.
