About the Role

Lumen Technologies is hiring an IT Systems Engineer II to provide advanced Tier II support for our nationwide fiber optic transport network and two geographically separated Network Operation Centers (NOCs). You will be operationally responsible for all IP and network management applications, maintaining 100% availability of these critical services.

What You'll Do

  • Serve as the primary NOC point of contact for problem escalations, working with Network Provisioners and vendors to develop solutions.
  • Operate as the network technical lead for IP and network management activities and first level of escalation for Tier I NOC personnel.
  • Troubleshoot, identify, and resolve logical and physical network issues, identifying trends before Tier III elevation.
  • Perform advanced diagnostics using software and hardware tools to determine network status and optimize performance.
  • Provide technical input to operational documentation and standard operating procedures for the IP and NM discipline.
  • Maintain Circuit Layout Records, network diagrams, IP routing spreadsheets, and other supporting documentation.
  • Provide technical guidance and direction to junior technicians.
  • Monitor, diagnose, and troubleshoot network problems in a mixed vendor environment.
  • Interact extensively with internal engineering, support teams, and vendors to resolve problems.
  • Assist with TTU/MOP for subtending devices and conduct turn-up activities for routing/switching and some optical transport platforms.
  • Administer network management applications like SolarWinds for monitoring, STIG compliance checks, and firmware upgrades.

What We're Looking For

  • Ability to provide on-call after hours support as required.
  • Willingness to work in a shift environment supporting 24x7 operations.
  • Ability to travel up to 15% for deployments to lab facilities and other NOC locations.
  • Ability to operate and accomplish technical tasks with minimum guidance.
  • Proficient knowledge of common network architectures for routing, switching, and security technologies.
  • Fluent understanding of Layers 1/2/3 inter-dependences and IP proficiency.
  • Knowledge of Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).
  • A Top Secret/SCI clearance.
  • Security+ or equivalent IAT/IAM/IASAE Level 2 of DOD 8570.1 certification.

Nice to Have

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in an Information Technology field.
  • At least 7 years of experience in a network management environment.
  • A high-level of proficiency in the IP technical discipline.
  • Expertise in network management protocols, tools and products, including SolarWinds, Cisco ISE, Cisco ACS, EIQ SecureVue, Neuralstar.
  • Working knowledge for layer 2, 3, and 4 data networking.
  • JNCIA or CCNA certification.
  • Firm knowledge of HAIPE and other encryption devices (KG-175G/D and KIV-7M).
  • Some knowledge and experience with optical transport technology.
