About the Role

The Legal Aid Society of San Diego seeks an Intake Specialist to join our mission-driven team. Under attorney supervision, you will serve as a critical first point of contact, greeting clients, handling a high volume of calls, and interviewing applicants to assess their needs for legal aid.

What You'll Do

  • Answer a high volume of incoming calls to our organization.
  • Perform personal interviews of applicants for legal services.
  • Determine the legal need and financial eligibility of the applicant for program services.
  • Make appropriate and knowledgeable referrals.
  • Accurately enter error-free data into our client database to create new files or add notes to existing cases.
  • Record required statistics.
  • Copy, maintain, and accurately distribute pro per packets.
  • Complete duties as assigned by management.

What We're Looking For

  • Ability to gather and complete information from clients in telephone or in-person interviews.
  • Ability to respond to clients in a calm, empathetic, and professional manner while directing conversations to pertinent issues.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Bilingual proficiency in English and Spanish, demonstrated through a successful language exam.
  • Demonstrated computer skills, including the ability to work with our databases and other software.
  • Strong organizational skills to handle an individual caseload.
  • Ability to think logically and follow written and oral instructions carefully.
  • Ability to remain calm and helpful in high-stress situations.
  • Ability to respect confidentiality and obtain confidential information in a trustworthy manner.
  • Must have reliable transportation.

Nice to Have

  • Fluency in written and spoken Spanish.
  • Demonstrated commitment to serving low-income people.
  • Ability to work successfully with people from diverse backgrounds.

Team & Environment

You will work under the supervision of an attorney supervisor and/or other managers as part of a team dedicated to providing access to justice.

Benefits & Compensation

  • Compensation range is $24.18 - $28.58 per hour, with a starting pay of $28.58.
