OpenAI is hiring an Indirect Tax Compliance Manager to own and continuously improve our end-to-end indirect tax compliance process. You will be responsible for driving timely, accurate compliance, maintaining audit readiness, and building scalable processes that improve visibility, control, and efficiency. While initially focused on US indirect tax, the scope may expand to support international compliance as our team and business grow.
What You'll Do
- Own the end-to-end US indirect tax compliance process, including data gathering, return support, filing coordination, payments, reconciliations, and post-filing documentation.
- Manage day-to-day compliance operations and partner with external service providers to ensure timely, accurate preparation and submission of filings.
- Develop and maintain audit-ready workpapers, reconciliations, process documentation, and supporting evidence for internal and external audits.
- Coordinate responses to tax authority notices, audits, and information requests, working closely with internal stakeholders and outside advisors.
- Strengthen the control environment by designing, documenting, and improving key controls and review procedures.
- Streamline the end-to-end compliance process by identifying automation opportunities, reducing manual work, and standardizing repeatable workflows.
- Use tools to build dashboards, monitor compliance status, track KPIs, identify anomalies, and improve reporting visibility.
- Partner cross-functionally with Accounting, Finance, Legal, and business teams to ensure indirect tax requirements are incorporated into upstream processes and downstream reporting.
- Review and validate tax data from ERP, billing, and other source systems to support accurate filings and reconciliations.
- Support new products, process changes, and system implementations by assessing compliance impacts and helping operationalize requirements.
- Monitor changes in US indirect tax rules, filing requirements, and compliance obligations, and translate them into practical process updates.
- Build scalable documentation and operational playbooks that make the compliance process easier to manage, review, and improve over time.
What We're Looking For
- 6+ years of relevant experience in US indirect tax compliance, tax operations, or a related role in industry or public accounting.
- Strong experience with US indirect tax compliance processes, audit support, reconciliations, and documentation.
- Experience managing or partnering with outsourced compliance providers and coordinating across multiple stakeholders.
- An enthusiasm for using technology, automation, and analytics to improve tax processes.
- A strong systems mindset, with experience working across spreadsheets, ERP systems, billing data, and tax-related workflows.
- Proven ability to identify process gaps, improve controls, and drive operational efficiencies across the compliance lifecycle.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including comfort working with large data sets and transaction-level detail.
- Excellent communication and project management skills, with the ability to work effectively across Tax, Finance, Accounting and external advisors.
- High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and the ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced environment.
