Philo is hiring a Head of Data Engineering

About the Role

Lead and grow a team of data engineers responsible for building and maintaining scalable data pipelines, data warehousing, and data infrastructure. Drive technical strategy and ensure alignment with business goals while fostering a culture of innovation and operational excellence.

Responsibilities

  • Define and execute the long-term vision for data engineering architecture
  • Oversee the design and implementation of data pipelines and ETL workflows
  • Ensure data reliability, accuracy, and timely delivery across systems
  • Lead the migration and modernization of legacy data systems
  • Collaborate with analytics, product, and engineering teams to understand data needs
  • Establish data governance, security, and compliance standards
  • Optimize data storage and query performance at scale
  • Manage data warehouse design and dimensional modeling
  • Evaluate and integrate new data technologies and tools
  • Drive automation of data monitoring, alerting, and quality checks
  • Mentor and develop data engineering team members
  • Set best practices for code quality, documentation, and deployment
  • Work closely with security teams on data access controls
  • Ensure efficient data flow between internal and third-party platforms
  • Support self-service analytics capabilities for non-technical users
  • Lead incident response and root cause analysis for data issues
  • Balance technical debt with feature development
  • Promote reusable data patterns and components
  • Oversee data catalog and metadata management
  • Ensure scalability and resilience of data infrastructure
  • Guide cost optimization strategies for cloud data platforms
  • Foster collaboration between data, engineering, and product teams
  • Implement observability across data pipelines
  • Support data privacy initiatives and regulatory requirements
  • Drive continuous improvement in data delivery speed and quality

About the Team

The data engineering team works closely with data scientists, analysts, and product teams to deliver trusted data infrastructure. The team values clarity, ownership, and continuous learning while operating at scale.

Technology Stack

Current tools include BigQuery, Airflow, Python, Terraform, and Looker. The team uses GitLab CI/CD, GCP, and follows infrastructure-as-code practices. We are continuously evaluating new technologies to improve performance and developer experience.
