The YMCA of the East Bay is hiring a Family Advocate to play a pivotal role in strengthening our community. In this position, you will be a trusted guide, leading goal-setting and coaching with parents and caregivers to ensure the best possible outcomes for children. You will connect families to vital community resources and services as part of our mission.
What You'll Do
- Develop positive, respectful, and trusting relationships with families and serve as a liaison to community school partners.
- Conduct outreach, recruitment, and enrollment in accordance with program standards.
- Implement strategies, including home visits, to learn about families and the community.
- Develop strengths-based assessments and individualized family plans in partnership with each family.
- Facilitate families' problem-solving, coach, consult, and advocate on their behalf.
- Ensure all health requirements are met, track health data, and assist with required screenings.
- Identify parent interests to plan appropriate activities, training, and groups.
- Engage parents in volunteering and community service opportunities.
- Work with program staff to support interactive literacy and learning activities between parents and children.
- Serve on an interdisciplinary team and facilitate case conferences for holistic service delivery.
- Research community resources, analyze them against family needs, and make appropriate referrals.
- Use a culturally competent approach, sensitive to each family's values, beliefs, and circumstances.
- Perform timely record-keeping and reporting tasks.
- Participate in strategic planning and program self-assessment to improve services.
What We're Looking For
- BA or BS in family development, psychology, sociology, or a related field.
- One year of related experience in a non-profit and/or human services setting.
- A high degree of cultural awareness and competency in cross-cultural practices with children and families.
- Experience working with low-income communities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to negotiate and mediate to attain win-win situations.
- T.B. and other required health clearances at the time of employment.
- Fingerprint clearance by the DOJ and CCL agencies.
- Valid California Driver's License and use of a personal automobile, including evidence of auto liability insurance.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and other computer programs.
