About the Role

The University of Virginia Department of Recreation is hiring a Facility Operations Assistant for the 2025-2026 academic year. This student wage position is based at the North Grounds and is central to maintaining a safe, welcoming, and well-run recreational environment for the University community.

What You'll Do

  • Establish a service-focused rapport with students, staff, members, and guests.
  • Promote exceptional customer service to create a positive environment.
  • Proactively respond to all emergency situations and follow established procedures.
  • Maintain a high standard of professionalism and cleanliness.
  • Enforce policies as a key link between members, the Facility Operations Supervisor, and full-time staff.
  • Provide a quality customer-service experience based on departmental Core Values.
  • Serve as an information agent for all UVA Rec facilities, programs, and services.
  • Present a welcoming, informed, and professional reception at welcome desks.
  • Actively monitor student, member, and guest access to recreational facilities.
  • Provide customer support by lending equipment, towels, and keys; renting lockers; and processing memberships.
  • Maintain cleanliness of fitness equipment and floors by completing regular cleaning rounds.
  • Provide cleaning support by sweeping floors, vacuuming mats, cleaning doors and windows, and emptying trash.
  • Assist the Facility Operations Supervisor with daily indoor and outdoor facility operations, including opening and closing procedures.
  • Support continuous maintenance and preparation of all areas by performing room resets and event preparations.
  • Maintain facility safety by assisting with the execution of Emergency Action Procedures.
  • Adhere to and enforce all University and Departmental policies and procedures.

What We're Looking For

  • Current UVA student.
  • Ability to dedicate 6-12 hours per week.
  • Availability for opening/closing shifts, Friday nights and/or weekends, and academic breaks.
  • Successful completion of department training.
  • Commitment to attending regularly scheduled staff meetings and in-service sessions.
