Join Wise as an Engineering Lead within the Spend Squad, focusing on expanding how our 700,000+ business customers use their Wise Account. You’ll be part of the Business Expense Management team, owning everything from tracking to managing expenses, creating simple experiences for a complex financial product. Your work will have a direct, measurable impact, helping business customers save time.
What You'll Do
- Own a technical roadmap to ensure the application is maintained to high standards.
- Lead the development of new solutions from the ground up to develop entirely new products for customers.
- Serve as a technical expert for the Business Expense Management domain.
- Provide hands-on technical leadership, guiding the team on architectural design, code reviews, and best practices.
- Ensure code quality, consistency, and maintainability through code reviews and best practices.
- Lead and mentor a diverse team of engineers (junior and senior), fostering a supportive environment that promotes technical growth.
- Participate in product roadmapping and strategy sessions with the product management team.
- Work closely with other Engineering Leads, Staff Engineers, and Product to shape the team’s and squad’s technical roadmaps.
- Help the team navigate complex priorities and make trade-offs to deliver solutions that reduce risk and unlock growth.
- Act as a key representative of the team, collaborating with stakeholders across the company and leading projects from beginning to release.
- Work closely with the Business squad, Spend squad and Account Squad to help define the Wise Business spending experience for customers.
- Design and build robust distributed backend systems for features like receipt collection and management, expense report submission, spend policy automation, month-end process automation using LLMs, innovative business card products, and expense visibility.

- A strong background in software engineering, with experience designing and building complex, scalable systems.
- Expert in delivering reliable and robust services in a production environment.
- Comfortable working on a complex domain and guiding a team through technical challenges.
- Experience working with distributed systems.
- A strong sense of ownership and ability to think beyond technical implementation to understand business and customer impact.
- Comfortable working autonomously and conceptualizing and driving initiatives forward to completion.
- Experience working closely with product and stakeholders to define requirements and prioritize impactful work.
- An empathetic leader with a track record of mentoring and coaching engineers at all levels.
- Ability to lead by example, inspiring your team to produce high-quality, maintainable code.
- An excellent communicator, capable of articulating technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Nice to Have
- Ideally some hands-on experience with front end development.
- Experience leading a team in a payments, fintech, or other complex, high-stakes domain.
- Prior experience working on a team with a global, distributed setup.
- Experience building systems that serve enterprise clients at scale.
- Previous experience scaling teams and systems for global reach.
- A strong foundation in distributed systems, and cloud architecture.
