Exmark & Spartan Mowers, a part of The Toro Company, is looking for an Electrical Systems Engineer to advance our electrified, automated, and smart connected product portfolio. In this role, you will be the critical nexus between mechanical, electrical, software, marketing, and systems engineering, translating customer needs into architected designs and production-ready platforms.
What You'll Do
- Own electrical and controls at the system level for electro-mechanical machines, including requirements, architectures, interfaces, diagnostics, and verification plans.
- Architect, select, and integrate system components (motors, inverters, batteries, chargers, sensors, switches, harnesses) to meet performance, durability, manufacturability, safety, and cost targets.
- Develop and tune controls systems for machine applications, including motors, actuators, and power-stage electronics.
- Design and implement embedded control functionality for motors and machines (including C/C++, RTOS, state-based architectures) in collaboration with firmware/software teams.
- Support development with model-based tools (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, LabVIEW) to develop control algorithms, simulations, and HIL/SIL environments.
- Lead hands-on prototyping, instrumentation, and integration of electrical, mechanical, and software systems to evaluate concepts and mature designs.
- Identify emerging technologies and develop innovative concepts and product proposals to meet market requirements or address customer challenges.
- Apply mechanical aptitude to mounting, cooling, sealing, and EMC considerations; support CAD and modeling activities for layouts, space claims, and harness routing.
- Execute fast-fail experiments and structured testing to quickly learn, iterate, and reduce technical risk.
- Plan and execute system-level validation using schematics, oscilloscopes, meters, DAQ systems, computer simulation, and data analysis to verify performance, durability, and reliability.
- Support compliance activities for EMC, safety, and functional safety requirements with regulatory teams and external labs.
- Operate as the technical nexus between mechanical, electrical, software, marketing, systems, and other groups to align solutions with customer needs and program objectives.
- Contribute to feasibility studies, concept development, and production launch activities within cross-functional teams.
- Support existing products through troubleshooting, debugging, and product improvement activities.
- Create and maintain technical documentation including system requirements, DFMEAs, test plans, and design review materials.
- Provide day-to-day technical guidance to junior engineers and collaborate effectively with suppliers.
- Collaborate with the Legal team regarding possible patent initiatives and strategies to minimize liability.
- Occasionally travel to test sites, suppliers, distributors, customers, manufacturing facilities, and others as required.
What We're Looking For
- B.S. or M.S. Degree in Electrical, Mechatronics, or related Engineering field from an ABET accredited university.
- Engineer II: 2-4 years experience in consumer or industrial product development, taking electromechanical systems from concept through production.
- Engineer III: 5-7 years experience in consumer or industrial product development, taking electromechanical systems from concept through production.
- Engineer IV: 8+ years experience in consumer or industrial product development, taking electromechanical systems from concept through production.
- Demonstrated high level of competency in product development, through production, of electrical, electronic, or electrified systems or products.
- Demonstrated experience in system-level controls & electrification development: requirements, power distribution, safety, diagnostics, and networking.
- Demonstrated motor controls experience.
- Demonstrated experience developing and debugging firmware/software for motors and machines.
- Demonstrated mechanical design experience and proficiency.
- Demonstrated ability to analyze and troubleshoot vehicle electrical systems using machine schematics, meters, oscilloscopes and data acquisition equipment.
- Demonstrated experience mentoring coworkers.
- Demonstrated strong collaboration skills, including ability to translate cross-functionally to converge on feasible, valuable solutions.

- Results-driven and action-oriented; self-motivated, positive and energetic.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Strong process orientation and drive for continuous improvement.
- Desire to work in a fast paced, challenging, and evolving environment with a team-first mindset.
- Demonstrated creative, fast fail learner who documents tradeoffs and iterates quickly.
- Ability to multitask and manage multiple simultaneous projects of various complexities and size.
