Black & Veatch is hiring an Electrical Engineer specializing in power system protection for our Protective Relay Settings Team in Houston, TX. This role is for an experienced engineer who will function as a technical subject matter expert, developing protective setpoints and working with critical system modeling software.
What You'll Do
- Function as a technical subject matter expert and specialist.
- Develop protective setpoints per industry standards, best practices, and client requirements.
- Work with system modeling software programs like ASPEN, CAPE, CYME, ETAP, and SKM.
- Develop downloadable setpoint files on multiple proprietary relay manufacturer software platforms such as SEL AcSELerator Quickset and GE Enervista.
- Develop and manipulate logic commonly utilized in protection and control schemes.
- Apply knowledge and comply with quality program requirements for assigned tasks.
- Prepare a variety of complex engineering deliverables for larger or multiple projects.
- Perform complex research and develop recommendations for equipment and materials selection.
- Manage assigned budget, schedule, and quality requirements.
- Actively coordinate with all other internal and external team members on projects.
- Assist with identifying key client interests and drivers.
- May assist with resource management strategy and some administrative responsibilities.
What We're Looking For
- Bachelor's Degree in Engineering from an accredited program or equivalent experience.
- Minimum of 5 years of related work experience.
- Ability to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements.
- Active engineering registration or licensure to support engineer of record (EOR) requirements.
Nice to Have
- 8-10 years of experience in the Transmission, Distribution, or Power Generation industry.
- Previous working experience with Protection & Control design concepts including one-lines, three-lines, schematics, and wiring.
- 8 years of experience in the development of protective relay settings.
- Significant experience with commonly utilized system modeling software programs (ASPEN, CAPE, CYME, ETAP, SKM).
- Significant knowledge and application of predominant protection schemes in Transmission, Distribution, and Renewable Collector Substations.
- Significant experience with Mathcad and Excel for protective setting calculations.
- Experience with communication protocols like DNP, SEL, MMS, and Modbus.
- Knowledge of IEC 61850 (GOOSE, MMS, SV) and its implementation.
- Knowledge and application of NERC-PRC standards and other industry standards.
- Proven ability to independently develop written communication and facilitate coordination.
- Proven ability to work cooperatively in a team environment and lead small projects.
- Significant experience supporting proposal development.
- Strong leadership skills with a desire to train and develop early career professionals.
- Significant experience functioning in a QC/QA capacity.
