About the Role
This position is responsible for reviewing clinical appeals related to pharmacy benefits, ensuring decisions align with medical guidelines and regulatory standards. The specialist supports compliance initiatives, contributes to audit preparation, and maintains accurate documentation to uphold policy integrity.
Responsibilities
- Evaluate clinical appeals for pharmacy services based on medical necessity and formulary guidelines
- Interpret clinical data and treatment protocols to support coverage determinations
- Ensure compliance with federal and state regulations in all appeal decisions
- Document review outcomes with clear, defensible rationale
- Collaborate with clinical and operational teams to resolve complex cases
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of pharmacy benefit policies and clinical standards
- Support internal and external audits by providing accurate case documentation
- Identify trends in appeal submissions and recommend process improvements
- Respond to provider inquiries regarding appeal status and decisions
- Participate in training initiatives related to clinical review procedures
- Ensure timely completion of appeal reviews within regulatory timelines
- Apply evidence-based guidelines to assess treatment appropriateness
- Maintain confidentiality of patient and provider information
- Assist in developing and updating clinical review protocols
- Monitor changes in healthcare regulations affecting pharmacy benefits
- Work cross-functionally to align clinical decisions with operational workflows
- Contribute to quality assurance activities for clinical determinations
- Support policy development based on clinical and compliance insights
- Use pharmacy data systems to retrieve and analyze patient treatment records
- Escalate complex clinical issues to senior clinical leadership when necessary
- Ensure consistency in decision-making across similar case types
- Maintain audit-ready documentation for all review activities
- Stay current with drug therapy advancements and clinical research
- Provide clinical expertise during appeals hearings or reviews
