About the Role

General Motors is looking for a Body Shop Controls Engineer to join our team at Arlington assembly. In this role, you will work collaboratively to continuously improve production equipment and processes using the latest automation control technology. You'll help troubleshoot equipment issues and manage small to medium-sized projects on a wide variety of equipment to advance our manufacturing effectiveness.

What You'll Do

  • Provide daily support for production operations with a focus on personnel and equipment safety, process quality, and uptime, specifically for automation and controls.
  • Provide technical and engineering support to assist production and maintenance with troubleshooting equipment and process failures, identifying effective counter-measures.
  • Identify and execute projects to meet departmental business objectives and drive continuous improvement of safety, quality, cost, and reliability.
  • Review equipment operation and reliability, developing tracking methods where applicable.
  • Identify and execute special projects for process and quality improvements, equipment refurbishment, line rate increases, and future programs.
  • Ensure new and existing equipment meets operational requirements and appropriate standards.
  • Ensure proper documentation (drawings, manuals, PM schedules) is available and maintained, spare parts are available, and maintenance SOPs are developed.
  • Maintain current technical knowledge and update management on status and trends regarding equipment standards and requirements.
  • Identify technical training and knowledge transfer opportunities with other Controls Engineers, Interns, and Maintenance Associates.
  • Attend regular departmental meetings to provide technical insight and coordinate planning.
  • Travel as required.

What We're Looking For

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years of experience in automation controls.
  • Experience working with and troubleshooting robotics and controls systems, including Fanuc robotics.
  • Proficient technical aptitude with industrial electrical systems regulations, design, and maintenance, particularly automation and controls systems.
  • Demonstrated technical project management experience.
  • Intermediate or advanced Control Logix PLC programming.
  • Familiarity with Variable Frequency Drives and HMIs.
  • General knowledge of manufacturing processes, preferably in the automotive industry.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple issues in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to resolve complex issues.
  • Ability to travel 10% or higher based on domestic business needs.

Nice to Have

  • A Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • 5+ years of experience in automation controls.
  • Body Shop Assembly Process experience.
  • Experience with Allen Bradley PLC and Siemens HMI.
