Penn State is hiring a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at its Harrisburg campus. This role will lead efforts to transform manufacturing courses and research, focusing on applications of artificial intelligence and machine learning. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching, research, and service while fostering an inclusive learning environment.
What You'll Do
- Teach 6 credit hours per semester for the first two years and 9 credits per semester thereafter, with potential reductions based on research productivity.
- Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in Mechanical Engineering, including modern manufacturing, automation, robotics, control, and Human-System integration.
- Teach in residential BS in Mechanical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering Technology, MS in Mechanical Engineering, and potentially PhD engineering programs.
- Participate in recruitment, retention, and student advising for both undergraduate and graduate students.
- Supervise graduate student culminating experiences.
- Conduct research contributing to smart manufacturing, Industry 4.0, IoT, and sustainability, focusing on AI-driven solutions for process automation and optimization.
- Support and develop new initiatives in smart manufacturing, digital factories, intelligent systems, robotics, automation, energy, infrastructure, and sustainability.
- Collaborate across engineering, computer science, and environmental science and engineering disciplines.
- Serve on committees at the department, school, and college level.
- Engage in professional service activities.
- Actively promote and advance the school’s commitment to inclusive education and improve the range of voices in STEM in the professional and regional community.
What We're Looking For
- Doctoral degree by August 2026 in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related field.
Nice to Have
- Background in mechanical engineering with emphasis on the use of AI, machine learning, and other advanced technologies to address smart manufacturing and Industry 4.0 challenges.
- Prior teaching and research experience with use of AI and ML in mechanical and manufacturing engineering.
Team & Environment
The role is part of a faculty of approximately 80 full-time faculty and 12 full-time staff within the School of Science, Engineering, and Technology at Penn State Harrisburg.
