The University of Hawaii, HI, is hiring an Assistant Professor in Animal Production within the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience (CTAHR). This role is responsible for teaching, research, and extension activities focused on improving food animal production in Hawaii, with a workload split of 45% instruction, 35% research, and 20% service.
What You'll Do
- Teach existing undergraduate and graduate animal science courses (25% effort), in person or online, and develop new courses aligned with departmental priorities.
- Develop and conduct extension teaching (20% effort) and stakeholder mentoring programs focused on improving production of beef cattle, swine, small ruminants, and poultry.
- Develop an applied research program (30% effort) aimed at improving food animal production in the state.
- Work with faculty, staff, and stakeholders across the state to enhance animal science teaching, research, and educational programs.
- Secure extramural funding for research, extension, and educational projects.
- Publish peer-reviewed original research and develop extension publications to disseminate scientific findings.
- Advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students in research and extension.
- Participate in departmental, college, university, and professional service activities.
What We're Looking For
- Ph.D. in Animal Sciences or a related field with a focus on food animal livestock species.
- Demonstrated knowledge of conventional food animal production practices in the U.S.
- Record of peer-reviewed publications as first or corresponding author and familiarity with current food animal research and extension literature.
- Ability to teach college-level courses in animal nutrition, genetics, physiology, meat science, and food animal production.
- Ability to plan and organize assigned activities and work effectively with faculty, staff, administration, and various stakeholders.
- Professionalism in meetings and conferring with others.
Nice to Have
- Postdoctoral training in animal sciences or related disciplines, with expertise in animal physiology, nutrition, reproduction, genetics, meat science, or current industry issues.
- Demonstrated experience working with livestock producers and stakeholders in food animal production, meat product development, and animal facility management.
- Ability to write grant proposals and acquire competitive, extramural funding for research and/or extension activities.

Benefits & Compensation
- Minimum starting salary of $89,868, commensurate with education and experience.
Work Mode
This is an onsite position based at the Mialani CARES Center in Hilo, HI.
