Remote (Global) Employment

Amber is hiring an Art Director

About the Role

Amber is hiring an Art Director for Play With Fire, our newest studio. You will be the central creative pillar responsible for reimagining a famous video game IP. This fully remote role involves leading the art vision, collaborating closely with a creative director, and overseeing art teams to implement compelling designs from concept to final product.

What You'll Do

  • Imagine and communicate the creative vision, evangelizing the game's direction to develop new content.
  • Develop and maintain the visual aesthetic throughout the entire product.
  • Lead and direct a team of artists in a remote environment, providing clear feedback and critique.
  • Think strategically about how art informs and shapes the player experience.
  • Be heavily involved in every stage of the game’s development cycle, ensuring the highest quality art.
  • Lead pre-production creation of storyboards, logos, UI, character design, environments, and define visual targets and style guides.
  • Motivate the team, keep artists focused, and devise solutions to mitigate art production risks.
  • Work closely with producers, programmers, game designers, and the creative director to interpret needs into final artwork.
  • Produce artwork in multiple styles to provide directional benchmarks for the team.
  • Evaluate, hire, and manage all art disciplines and third-party/outsource partners. Develop leadership and empower the team.
  • Oversee production of art tools, pipelines, and content creation, identifying new tools and evaluating competing products.

What We're Looking For

  • A strong understanding of art fundamentals, multiple art styles, anatomy, and appeal.
  • Mandatory excellent communication skills.
  • Proven experience as an art director or production designer in a game studio.
  • At least 5 years of hands-on experience on games, ideally from scratch.
  • Strong knowledge in building design or environment art, as well as different art-styles, techniques, and workflows.
  • In-depth knowledge of all aspects of asset creation including modeling, texturing, animation, sprite production, UI and VFX.
  • Deep understanding of art disciplines and their workflows.
  • Strong leadership skills to guide a large group toward a singular vision.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills combined with a start-up mentality, determination, and ownership.

Nice to Have

  • The ability to adapt to and innovate new styles and techniques.
  • A strong collaborative nature to partner with senior art directors and discipline leads.
  • Openness to learn new tools and game engines.
  • A habit of maintaining up-to-date knowledge of cultural, design, and business trends.

Team & Environment

You will collaborate with a prolific indie creative director, serving as a critical creative team member and guiding force. You'll also work closely with discipline leads.
