Responsibilities
- Performs duties as delegated by The Chief Engineer and First Engineer.
- Acts as Engineer Watch Officer in the engine control room overseeing the operation, maintenance and engine ratings.
- Must be familiar and proficient in maintenance and repairs of the main and auxiliary engines, their systems and equipment, ship's plants for fresh and sea water, boiler plant and related systems and equipment, emergency generators and related systems, steering gear, stabilizers, propeller shafts, stern tubes, bow thrusters, HVAC and pneumatic valves.
- Shall ensure that adequate rounds of the machinery and steering gear spaces are made for detecting and reporting equipment malfunctions or breakdowns, performing or directing routine adjustments, required upkeep and any other necessary tasks.
- Read and understand the Chief Engineer’s standing orders.
- To familiarize himself/herself with regulations and safe working procedures pertaining to tasks assigned to him/her, or to be executed under his/her responsibility.
- Responsible for all lube oil stocks and transfers and liaise with the Chief Engineer for ordering in a timely manner.
- Ensure that minimum stock of spare parts for areas under his/her responsibility are kept in stock at all times. Request for parts to be submitted to the Chief Engineer.
- To ensure that critical or special work is not undertaken without a Work Permit signed by delegated Engine Officer.
- To always use the correct PPE equipment provided.
- All watches are to ensure that bilges are dry at all times and all bilge pumping.
- Operations are correctly logged in the oil record book.
