The Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles is hiring a Weigh Station Technician to ensure highway safety by monitoring and inspecting overweight and oversized trucks. This role is critical for enforcing commercial vehicle size and weight regulations, coordinating with law enforcement, and protecting Virginia's highways, bridges, and tunnels.
What You'll Do
- Monitor and inspect overweight and oversized trucks to ensure motorist safety and protect Virginia’s highways.
- Enforce safety and weighing policies and procedures related to Virginia’s size and weight laws.
- Work alongside State Police, local law enforcement, and other officials.
- Monitor commercial vehicle activity at weigh stations and issue citations for violations of size and weight laws.
- Ensure compliance with state and federal laws.
- Monitor the functionality and accuracy of equipment to ensure proper operational standards are upheld.
- Perform accurate inspections, financial transactions, and report generation to ensure compliance.
- Handle expenditures and Station activities, ensuring financial and operational efficiency.
- Examine Hauling Permits, and IFTA, IRP, and UCR documents.
- Collect Liquidated Damages.
- Perform fuel sampling techniques, including detecting dyed fuel for tax evasion, and maintaining chain-of-custody.
What We're Looking For
- Proficient in data analysis, identifying operational gaps, and developing solutions to improve compliance and efficiency.
- Strong oral and written communication skills for engaging with staff, vendors, and customers, with the ability to explain complex regulations.
- Skilled in using technical systems like IRIS, Microsoft Office, and DMV databases for operations, reporting, and tracking.
Nice to Have
- Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and the ability to interpret and apply financial data in budgeting and financial reporting.
- Knowledge of customer service principles, particularly handling complex DMV transactions like license reinstatements and citations.
- Strong understanding of safety protocols and emergency procedures for operating weigh stations and identifying unsafe working conditions.
- Understanding of the Motor Carrier Size and Weight Manual, DMV policies, and procedures.
- Knowledge of truck weighing policies and procedures.
- Ability to interpret, explain, and apply complex material, such as Motor Vehicle Code and Commercial Vehicle Operations, ensuring compliance.
- Enhanced knowledge of Virginia's Motor Carrier Size, Weight, and Equipment Regulations, as well as related state and federal laws applicable to commercial vehicle operations.
- Experience with truck configuration and equipment.

Benefits & Compensation
- Annual compensation range of $54,208.00 - $62,339.20.
- A shift differential of three percent added to base salary.
